Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) in Portland, Maine is a structured program of outpatient psychiatric services and therapeutic care. IOP can be utilized as an alternative to inpatient care or serve as a step-down level of clinical care once inpatient treatment concludes. At Bishop Health, our Portland, Maine IOP program runs during the day and does not require an overnight stay, making it an ideal option for those who are looking for flexible treatment. IOP provides most of the benefits of inpatient treatment in a less restrictive setting. The program includes medication management as well as individual, group, and family therapy.

The Mental Health Intensive Outpatient Program (MH-IOP) is an outpatient program designed for adults 18 and older living in Portland who are stepping down from an acute hospitalization or transitioning into a higher level of care from an outpatient setting. Many clients who participate in our IOP have been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, a depressive disorder which may be treated with ketamine treatment, ketamine infusion therapy, or transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy, or a bipolar disorder, though individuals who struggle with other mental health conditions (i.e. psychotic disorders) may be assisted by the IOP level of care as well. The MH-IOP offers a well-coordinated program of care that provides intensive treatment directed by a psychiatrist in a structured setting. Our clinical approaches include treatment protocols in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and mindfulness based-treatment plus education and medication management.

Who Qualifies for Our IOP Program?

Clients must have a primary mental health diagnosis to qualify for our Portland MH-IOP. If you have a primary substance use disorder diagnosis, our program would likely not be the best fit. If you have co-occurring diagnoses of a mental health and substance use disorder, we will evaluate on a case-by-case basis. In such situations, we might develop extra criteria for individuals to attend MH-IOP (i.e.,attend AA/NA), so MH-IOP can be as effective and beneficial as possible. Participants must ultimately be able to maintain sobriety during the duration of MH-IOP to meet criteria and remain fully engaged in our program.

If you are interested in our Portland, Maine IOP program but are still unsure as to whether or not our program is well-suited for you and your personal needs, we are happy to conduct a brief pre-assessment over the phone. If we determine that our program is not the best fit for you, our experienced admissions staff will point you in the right direction.
